Kota Kinabalu: A good teacher will always be remembered by his or her students as reflected in the case of near centenarian Tina Rimmer.Last Saturday, ex-students, whom she had taught at Siew Ching Primary School and St Dominic's Primary School (both in Lahad Datu) until 1974, gathered at her humble home in Likas, here, to celebrate her 98th birthday with a cake.

"Our gesture demonstrates our affection and care for our former teacher," they said.

Among them were former Lahad Datu District Officer Peter Seck, who later served in Kudat and Labuan, prominent lawyer Ho Kin Kong, retired bankers Ho Kin Keong, Billy Seck and Chen Tham Tai, retired teacher Hilda Seck and retired civil servant Chu Sat Bong.

Also present were old boys and girls such as Lee Chee Phin, Ben Fung, Seck Tan Fung, Liew Su Hen and Susie Thien as well as old friends like Cathrine Heng and her spouse Joseph Wong.

When asked on her birthday wish, Tina, the first woman education officer in North Borneo (now Sabah) under the British Colonial Government, replied, "I have lived here almost all of my life," and then added, "I hope Sabah has a happy and prosperous future."

The prolific artist and published writer also expressed her hope that more jobs will be created for youths in tourism, forestry and agriculture, among other sectors.

As far as the discipline of art is concerned, Tina's aspiration is for local boys and girls to develop their own talents as Sabah artists.

"Sabah should maintain its own culture without being too influenced by any external culture. In your artistic endeavour, never lose contact with your culture and remember that you are Sabahans," she advised.
