Sabah: A total of 73 plastic bags of rubbish comprising mostly water bottles were collected during the "Clean Up the World Campaign" at Pulau Tiga organised by Sabah Backpacker Operators Association (SBA) during the weekend.SBA conducted the campaign in collaboration with the Tourism and Culture Ministry, Tourism Malaysia, Sabah Parks, Almacrest International College and Monkey Top Safari Eco Lodge.

According to SBA President Richie Lee, the campaign was held to continue raising awareness among the students and younger generation on the importance of protecting the environment.

"SBA is collaborating with Almacrest International College through a Memoranda of Understanding for our internship programmes. So we take the opportunity to bring the students and lecturers to participate in order to expose them to environmental issues and tourism product knowledge," he said.

Lee said a day earlier, the students also participated in a night safari and morning river cruise at Klias to experience nature and wildlife adventure.

"By giving them exposure using our members' resources, we hope to produce quality front liners in the tourism industry by the year 2020," he said.

In line with SBA's aim in promoting "Sabah the Best Backpackers Destination In Malaysia", the students would be given a chance to travel all over Sabah under the association's roadmap before they complete their education.

"This will give them a better direction of their career path before they attend our internship programme. At the same time, it will help benefit and encourage domestic travelling in Sabah," he said.
