DAP claims credit for giving women role
Kota Kinabalu: DAP Sabah Chairman Jimmy Wong said the party has been successful in starting a viable DAP women's movement in Sabah. He said this after the launching of the DAP Kota Kinabalu and Keningau women's protem committee over the weekend.

The DAP KK Wanita wing is headed by Florence Lim while Clare Taunek heads the DAP Keningau Wanita wing.

Wanita DAP National Chief Chong Eng, the Assemblywoman for Padang Lalang-cum- Exco for Youth and Sports, Women, Family and Community Development, Penang; MP for Kulai in Johor Teo Nie Ching and Assemblyman for Pasir Pinji in Perak, Howard Lee joined local Sabah leaders to the launch of these women's wings.

In their addresses, Chong and Teo gave an elaborate explanation on the position of women in society especially in Malaysia. They reminded the women that they are voters and their votes count and that they can change the government of the day.

Both leaders stressed that working women and women who opted to manage the homes play a very important role not only in building a family but also in nation building.

They are also responsible in voting in a good government, they said.

The two leaders wanted women to realise their special role in society.

Chong said the party believes in gender equality and for a start has allocated 30 per cent of the leadership position to women.

"DAP needs more women leaders. Let us not stop at 30 per cent," she said, adding that the percentage can be more than 30 per cent if they had more capable women who were willing to sacrifice and commit to the party.

Both national leaders were happy to see the emergence of some potential women leaders in Sabah.

"We are glad by the assurance from the local DAP leaders that more women will be fielded in the coming 14th general election.

We are also glad to know Wong believes that the women wings will spur the party to greater achievement in the coming 14th general election," they said.

Both leaders also promised to return to Sabah to boost the women's wing in terms of capacity building, team spirit and finance.

In this aspect, the DAP Native Consultative Council headed by Dr Edwin Bosi will be identifying the 'golden' sons and daughters of Sabah.

The programme which was initiated by Wong will be headed by popular artist-turned politician Andrew Mudi or Atama.

The programme will work closely with the DAP Wanita and DAP Youth (DAPSY) in the search for these golden sons and daughters of Sabah.

According to Wong, they hoped to attract more young men and women to join the party in order to fulfill the visions and missions of those involved in the Double Six tragedy on June 6, 1976.
