Kota Kinabalu: Three Indonesian fishermen were detained by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) after they were found violating the terms and conditions stated on their license off the Kudat waters on Sunday. Kudat Maritime Operations Officer Left. Rody Bejie on Monday said the trio, aged between 21 and 49, were brought to the Kudat jetty and handed over to the Kudat Maritime for further investigations under Section 8 (b) of the Fisheries Act 1985.

He said the detention came after the team patrolling the area saw a boat conducting fishing activities in the dark at about 1.45am.

"Inspections showed that they were fishing some 2.3 nautical miles from the coastal area when it is clearly stated on their licence that they are only allowed to fish in areas more than three nautical miles from shore," he said.

On that note, he again reminded fishermen and fishing boat operators to abide by the terms stated in their license.

He urged them not to violate the law just for the sake of raking in profit, adding that those who have information on such activities or are in need of assistance while at sea, to contact MERS 999.

It was reported earlier this month, that encroachment by fishing boats into the gazetted 500-metre safety radius within the Petronas' offshore oil platforms in the country has reached alarming levels, especially in the State.

Petronas Chairman for Sabah and Labuan, Mohamad Firouz Asnan said more than 9,000 incidences of such encroachment were recorded since 2012 until now.

He was quoted as saying that it is a worrying situation particularly in Sabah where most incidences are committed by traditional fishermen who are using pump boats and seem oblivious to the danger.
