KK Bersih rally: Five give police statements

Kota Kinabalu: Three members of the organising committee of the just concluded Bersih 4 Kota Kinabalu and two of the speakers at the event have been called in by the police to give statements to assist in their investigation.Jannie Lasimbang, Matthew Yong, S.M. Muthu, Sandakan MP Stephen Wong and Hendry Shim presented themselves at the Karamunsing Police Station here at around noon Tuesday.Jannie revealed that the police had told her they are keen to finish taking all the statements as soon as possible but did not state their next course of action.ADVERTISEMENT In the meantime, she declared that the 24-hour Bersih 4 peaceful assembly, which took place on Aug 29 to 30, had achieved its purpose."The people have overcome fears, intimidation and roadblocks to be part of this historical gathering and the Walk for Democracy," she said.On behalf of the organising committee, she thanked the participants who were there with them and ensured that they delivered their demands to the Government and the message to City Hall."We salute all our volunteers, medical team, security team, the media and all the generous donors who have donated food, drinks and other in-kind contribution.ADVERTISEMENT "We also appreciate the presence of Suhakam and the Sabah Law Association to monitor the situation throughout the assembly," she said. Jannie also thanked the police for ensuring peace and order is maintained in a professional way.

"Bersih Sabah hopes that the people will stand firm and continue to demand for institutional reforms for the betterment of Malaysia as a whole," she said.The organisers put the number of participants in the assembly between 3,000 and 4,000 people although the police reported the number to be a lot lower at around 1,000 only.
