Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Athletics Association (SAA) has identified potential state athletes for their Sukma Games relay teams during the just concluded Sabah Open Athletics Championship held in Tawau over the weekend.SAA Secretary, Francis Shim said on Tuesday that the Sukma committee has shortlisted at least 20 of them for the boys and girls 4x100m and 4x400 relay teams for the Kuching meet next year."Some of the athletes had caught the eyes of the committee and we expect the respective coaches from their district to inform the athletes individually. ADVERTISEMENT "Once they are shortlisted, we will try to get them the training allowances. We need to prepare the teams early and we can't wait until next year to start training. So we will try to talk to the Sabah Sports Council as soon as possible."At the moment, they are not in the team because they did not make the qualifying mark based on the third place record from the last Sukma Games in Perlis. We need to give them training allowances because they wouldn't be keen to come for training if they are not given allowances, which is understandable. We only need 20 of them, both girls and boys, as some members of the relay teams will come from those who have already qualified early and named in the list." Francis added that many of the junior athletes did well in the Tawau meet even though none of them managed to make the qualifying mark."Most of the junior athletes did reasonable well despite not making the mark. It is still early stage and there are three more championships coming up this year for them to impress, starting with the Sports Excel inter-club relay championship to be held in Perak on Sept 19 where we will be sending all four of our relay teams."
