Kota Kinabalu: More than 200 junior footballers turned up on the first day of the selection trial for the 2016 Under-19 Youth and Under-21 President Cup squads at the Likas Stadium, Wednesday. It was earlier expected only about 90 players will show up as the name of the players had already been identified by the selection committee.

Veteran state coach Justin Ganai who is heading the trial was amused by the overwhelming response.

"It came as a shock to us as we didn't expect such a large number of players.

"I found out that someone along the line had edited my message and called for those who are interested to just come for the trial. "In order not to disappoint those who have traveled from far, we just accepted them and gave them a fair trial.

"In fact some of them are quite impressive and we will see how it goes until the final day," he said.

He added that all the 10 current Youth Cup players and 16 President Cup players who are still eligible for next season campaign were present at the trial.

Meanwhile, the trial this year started early as was requested by Sabah Football Association team management committee head, Joehari Ayub.

He hoped that with the early selection of players, both teams can have an early start in their preparation and mount a strong challenge next season.
