KK flights soon by China's largest airline

Kota Kinabalu: CHINA'S largest airline company, China Southern, will commence scheduled direct flights to Sabah soon. Disclosing this Tuesday, State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said China Southern Airlines will commence thrice weekly flights from Guangzhou to Sabah from Dec 1.

"China Southern's entry into Sabah will significantly increase the number of Chinese tourists to the State with its vast network of domestic destinations in China.

"China Southern is the biggest airline in China," he said.

The entry of China Southern into this sector comes following the success of the China Eastern Airlines, another airline company in China, which has been hailed as a big success with passenger load surpassing 90 per cent. China Eastern presently flies between Shanghai and Sabah three times a week.

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Government continued its momentum in managing the economy in line with the commitment and spirit of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) when it posted record high state revenue of RM6.973 billion last year.

In view of the good response, Masidi said China Eastern is expected to either increase the flight service to five times a week or use bigger bodied aircraft by the end of October.

China Eastern Airlines via its subsidiary, Shanghai Airlines, has commenced non-stop direct flights from Shanghai to Kota Kinabalu since July 15.

The airline services the sector thrice weekly, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and vice versa, every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

The airline will use the Boeing 737-800 aircraft with 12 Business Class and 148 Economy seats to service this route.

Visitors from China are seen returning to Sabah this year after experiencing industry jitters since 2013, beginning with the Lahad Datu incursion, followed by a series of kidnapping incidents involving Chinese nationals and airline tragedies.
