Why only in Papar but not Tuaran?
Kota Kinabalu: DAP Sabah has urged the Land and Survey Department to take action against all illegal sand dredging activities in the State, including at Sungai Tuaran. Its Organising Secretary Junz Wong, in a statement, lauded State Land and Survey Director Safar Untong on the swift action taken against illegal sand dredging activity in Kg Manggis, Papar following a Daily Express report.

Junz was, however, surprised why no action was taken against the suspected illegal sand dredging activities at Sungai Tuaran despite numerous reports and complaints lodged all these years.

"When will Safar send a team to the sites to take necessary technical and spatial data to produce an in-site survey plan of the affected areas in Tuaran?" Junz asked.

"Have the sand miners (even if they have Temporary Occupational Lease licences) complied with the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) conditions and adhere to the "Aku Janji" pledge?" Junz asked.

There was apparent widening of Sungai Tuaran, which has already "eaten" up part of the road reserve at Jalan Topokon Labuaya, near Kg Kiwatu.

The massive soil erosion causing the river banks to collapse has also caused danger to existing houses, which has been reported as well.

One house owner on the land titled under Country Lease No.3405 beside Sungai Labuaya was extremely worried that the massive erosion would affect the foundation of her house and cause it fall into the river.

Many have claimed that the dredging operators in Sungai Tuaran had flouted the terms and conditions in their licences similar to the Kg Manggis dredging.

It was confirmed that the Manggis operator continued dredging despite the permit having expired two years ago. It was also confirmed that the dredging was so severe that it altered the course of the river.

"We believe that the same thing is happening in Sungai Tuaran, so we urge Safar Untong to send his team to investigate as soon as possible.

"Do we have to wait for the negative impacts of the dredging in Sungai Tuaran to worsen till the course of the river has also been altered before action would be taken?" Junz asked.

Junz, who is also Likas Assemblyman, also urged Safar to brief the State Assembly the extent of illegal sand dredging activities in the State and enlighten the house of the department's stringent strategies and action plans to curb these illegal sand mining throughout Sabah.
