KYS aims to be Sabah's first skills varsity
Kota Kinabalu: State-owned Kolej Yayasan Sabah (KYS) aims to become the first skills and technical university in the State, said its new Chief Operating Officer Dr Hajah Tarsiah TZ Taman. She said the 25-year-old college, which has been self-dependent since last year, is currently undergoing a transformation process to achieve the objective.

The process will also involve changing the college name to Kolej Kemahiran Sabah, she told Resource Development and Information Technology Minister Datuk Siringan Gubat during a courtesy visit at the Ministry in Wisma Bandaraya, here, recently.

The ministry's Permanent Secretary, Datuk Bruno Vun, was also present.

Tarsiah, who was accompanied by other KYS management heads, said the college is now looking at upgrading its training courses to a higher level like Advanced Diploma, apart from starting to give emphasis to the use of English Language as a communicating tool in the teaching.

"We want to make English as a communicating tool among our trainees. This is important especially in a field like automotive where we have foreign visitors from the automotive industry visiting us from time to time.

"It will help our trainees to communicate with the visiting foreigners, making it easier for any transfer of technology knowhow and so on," she said.

The college, which presently has about 2,000 trainees, is in the process of opening more district branches, she said, adding that they are also looking at working together with more large industrial players like Toyota, Tan Chong Group and Petronas, among others.

During the briefing, Tarsiah also expressed hope that the college and Ministry can work together in any training field deemed suitable.

She also informed the Minister that the college has nothing to do with the Kolej Universiti Yayasan Sabah (KUYS).

Congratulating Tarsiah on her appointment, Siringan believed she would be able to bring the college to greater heights.

The Minister also praised the college for the transformation move, saying by doing so the college would help the Ministry in fulfilling the great demand for skilled manpower in the State.

"The Ministry, through the Human Resource Development Department has been producing thousands of skilled workers for the State. We will also look into the proposal on collaboration between the Ministry and KYS," he said.
