Tenom: Pertubuhan Mamagun Sabah (Mamagun) has welcomed the proposal to create new State and Parliamentary seats under the proposed electoral re-delineation exercise. Its President Rudy Sulaiman Mairi said this is especially so for areas in the interior.

He said based on the increasing number of voters in areas populated by the Mamagun community, it is high time for the government to consider the proposal.

He said this was necessary to ensure more effective representation and delivery of services to the constituencies by their elected representatives considering that the population of certain areas have increased.

He said this during a meeting with several Mamagun community leaders led by Mamagun Supreme Council Member Reduan Puor at Dalit here, last Saturday.

"We need to have elected representatives for areas which are densely populated by the Mamagun community so that the community would be well represented and not be sidelined from the rapid development brought by the government."

He cited Sook, Nabawan, Melalap and Tongod which is no longer suitable to be represented by only one elected representative since the population has increased and will need improve quality service and effectiveness of delivery, especially in carrying out various wellbeing programmes for the people.

Rudy said Mamagun views the matter positively and that it should be given attention by the government based on the issues which could benefit the community in the area especially in terms of economic growth.

A similar proposal was made by several Barisan Nasional components leaders including Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan who is Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) President when officiating at the PBS Kuamut Annual Meeting several weeks ago.

The PBS Melalap Annual Meeting officiated by Minister of Rural Development Datuk Radin Malleh who is PBS Vice President also proposed for at least 11 new State seats and five new parliamentary seats in Sabah under the proposed electoral re-delineation exercise to be carried out soon.
