SHAH ALAM: The government has proposed more exposure on accountancy be given to Bumiputera students as the current number of accredited accountants is worrying. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar said currently, only eight per cent of the 32,000 accredited accountants nationwide were Bumiputera and this number must be increased."There are many factors causing the lack of Bumiputera involvement in accountancy, including the little exposure, and that this field requires a high level of knowledge of the number management and competency in English.

"Because of this, many Bumiputera students are less interested in accountancy whereas it is a profession which will be in high demand in the future," he told reporters after a discussion session with accountancy students from several institutions of higher learning (IPT) in Selangor here Monday.

He said close cooperation among accredited accountancy bodies with the IPTs was crucial in providing the best educational facilities to cultivate interest in accountancy and produce more accredited accountants among Bumiputeras.

This is because the nation was targeting to produce 60,000 accountants by 2020, to meet the increased demand in the future.

Meanwhile, Malaysia Professional Accounting Centre (MyPAC) chairman, Datuk Zaiton Mohd Hassan said the centre was ready to cooperate with Yayasan Peneraju Pendidikan Bumiputera to hold intervention programmes that could attract Bumiputera students.

She said about 18,000 accredited Bumiputera accountants were needed in the next five years to achieve the 30 per cent Bumiputera participation in the field in this country.

"Accountancy is seen as a crucial profession in the future, so we are holding various programmes to attract Bumiputeras to join the profession.

"We will continue assisting Bumiputeras in this sector by giving a clearer picture of the profession's future where the expected salary is a minimum of RM5,000 per month," he said. – Bernama
