Kota Kinabalu: Two single mothers, who told the Magistrate's Court on Tuesday that they stole to bear the expenses of their children, were sentenced to 14 days' jail.Locals Fauzeya Bakar, 36, and Aminah Amin, 37, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Mohd Faiz Omar to stealing a drill set worth RM110 at the Super Save premises in Centre Point Sabah at 8pm on Sept 24.

Inspector Jakariya Jupakkal, prosecuting, told the court that a worker of the premises realised the drill set was missing from the display rack on Sept 25.

On checking the closed-circuit television recording, two women were seen stealing the item.

Both Fauzeya and Aminah were detained on Oct 1 when they were spotted in the same outlet. Pleading for leniency, their legal aid counsel, Goldam Hamid, said the amount involved was only RM110 and that both women were single mothers, with Fauzeya having two children and Aminah five.

He said both Fauzeya and Aminah requested for a short stay in prison since they could not afford to pay any fine.

When asked by the court why they stole the item, both the women said it was to be sold to support their children. The court ordered Fauzeya and Aminah to serve the jail term from the date of their arrest.

The duo were charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to 10 years or fine on conviction.

In another similar case, a university student from China claimed trial to stealing a hotel guest's belongings worth RM3,500.

Zhang Kun, 23, pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to stealing a mini iPad, a digital camera and a backpack in a room at the Cititel Hotel here at 1.30pm on Sept 23.

Inspector Ispandiar Jasdi, prosecuting, proposed bail at RM3,000 but Zhang's counsel Aida Jaafar Mad Ariff requested the amount to be reduced, saying that Zhang has no family in Sabah and that his study at Universiti Malaysia Sabah here would be affected if he were to be detained under remand.

Abbie set Nov 11 for case management and released Zhang on a bail of RM1,000 in one surety with a condition that he report to the police station every two weeks and that his passport be kept by the court.

Meanwhile, ten people were fined and jailed for taking drugs.

Mohd Dansy Iswandi Ramzi, Edy Anto, Muhd Shihabuddin Mustapha, Teo Pin Sun, Dominic Gintua, Shahirul Shamley, Wilbert Aloysius, Alvin Gamad Jasmin, Asrap Muksan Saladain and Ng Nyuk Chen admitted before Mohd Faiz to committing the offence at separate locations here in August.

Mohd Dansy was ordered to pay a fine of RM1,800 or four months' jail, Edy, Muhd Shihabuddin, Teo, Dominic, Shahirul, and Wilbert were fined RM1,500 each while there rest were sentenced to three months' jail.
