Cops rescue 11 sex slaves

Kota Kinabalu: Eleven sex slaves were rescued by police in two separate raids in Penampang early Wednesday. The 11 Filipino women aged between 22 and 36 were rescued from a budget hotel and a padlocked apartment at the Beverly Hills Apartments area not far from the State Capital.Seven men believed to be customers and the caretaker of the premises were also arrested.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said the raids were carried out by teams of CID from the Penampang and Kepayan police station at about 12.15am following a report from the Philippines embassy.

"The suspects aged between 20 and 39 will be remanded for six days to facilitate investigations while the victims have been placed at the Women's Special Shelter Home in Likas," he said in a press statement late Wednesday.

"A 14-day Interim Protection Order has been obtained for the women," he added.

On other developments, Jalaluddin said the dusk to dawn sea curfew in Sabah has been extended until Oct 24.

The curfew involves seven districts namely Tawau, Sandakan, Beluran, Lahad Datu, Semporna, Kunak and Kinabatangan.
