Kota Kinabalu: A student from China has been arrested for allegedly stealing from his countrymen who are in the country as tourists. The 23-year-old suspect is said to be studying in one of the higher learning institutions near the city, and is believed to be responsible for at least two cases of theft here.

He allegedly obtained entry into victims' hotel rooms by posing as a guest who had forgotten his room key.

City Police Chief ACP M. Chandra said on Wednesday that the student was nabbed after the latest incident on Sept 3, after he had approached a group of Chinese tourists at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport Terminal II at about 2am.

"The suspect persuaded the tourists to take his 'transport service' instead of licensed taxis by offering cheaper fares," he said.

He said the victims arrived at a hotel in Sembulan not far from the State Capital at about 4.30am, where the suspect helped the guests with their luggage.

Chandra said the tourists went out to the nearby Centre Point Shopping complex at about 10am and were shocked to find the cupboard open and bags slashed when they returned at about 4pm that evening.

"Cash of about RM6,800 (10,000RMB) and a Samsung smartphone was missing. The total loss is estimated at around RM7,500," he said.

"The suspect is also believed to be responsible in a similar case using the same modus operandi on Sept 24," he said.

ACP Chandra said the suspect was arrested on Sept 30.

The suspect was charged at the Kota Kinabalu Magistrates Court Tuesday under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft in a dwelling house.

The trial will be conducted on Nov 12.
