Sandakan: The State Security Working Committee (JKKN) chaired by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman will decide the future direction of barter trading in Sandakan, Tawau and Kudat, said Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) Commander Datuk Abdul Rashid Harun. He said the decision would be based on the summary prepared by Esscom at the three-day Barter Trade Roadmap Workshop, which ended here Friday, held in coordination with 16 other agencies.

"Hopefully positive decision can be made by JKKN, particularly involving improvisation,"he told reporters after closing the workshop.

He said it was time to review the future direction of barter trading in the three districts, particularly in terms of its weaknesses.

Abdul Rashid said barter trade system had been operating in the eastern area of Sabah since 1962, involving the exchange of goods and had been evolving throughout the years.

Abdul Rashid said in the beginning, the system started with exchange of goods such as fruits from the southern Philippines to the districts.

"But lately, they are not only exchanging goods but some of them bring cash and buy the goods especially the subsidised ones," he said.

Meanwhile, Esscom, in a statement, said 95 authorisation letters, 35 each in Sandakan and Tawau and 25 in Kudat, were issued by the State Government in 2014 and this year.

A total of 31 companies, 14 in Sandakan, Tawau (10) and Kudat (seven) had received approval to run the business.

The letter of authorisation is issued by Sabah Finance Ministry with recommendation from the National Security Council.
