Invention by young Sabahan granted patent by the US

Kota Kinabalu: An invention by a young Sabahan has been granted patent by the United States (US) Patent and Trademark office.The inventor, Jack Tam Zong Yuan, 31, who hails from Sandakan, is the youngest son of SC Tam, the Daily Express Bureau Chief for Sandakan. He recently received the Issued Patent Award plaque during estern Digital Malaysia's Innovation Day. Ching Chek Seng 36, co-invented this patent with Tam.

It is called "Disk Drive Employing A Temperature Dependent Write Offset.

Such novel and useful inventions have been proven to improve quality in terms of data integrity of hard disk drives, particularly important in today's highly data-driven IT sector.

On June 24, this year, Tam was issued his first patent for inventing "Methods and devices for determining thermally-induced expansion of magnetic recording media."

Both patents belong to hard disk drive findings and technology called the "thermal expansion".

Tam, an Electrical and Electronic Engineer, attached with US-based Western Digital Malaysia in Petaling Jaya, received his primary and secondary education in SK St Monica and SM Sung Siew here, respectively.

The youngest in a family of five, he attained his higher learning at Uniten (Universiti Tenaga National) and graduated in Electronic Electrical Engineering with honors.

He is now a Principal Engineer in this multi-national company of over 10,000 personnel, taking care of a team of engineers within Asia.

Tam also holds a Merit for Diploma in Piano Performance music with Guildhall School of Music (UK) as music is one of his hobbies and is currently pursuing further studies at Lancaster-Sunway University Dual MBA.

Brendan Handley, the Patent Counsel in WD Asia congratulated Tam and encouraged him to keep up the momentum in submitting Invention Disclosure in order to protect the company's Intellectual Property.

Tam, who scored 8A1 and 1A2 in his SPM, was also under sponsorship of the Sabah Government. He attributed his achievement not only to the supports from Western Digital but also to the State Government, former teachers, his siblings and parent, respectively.
