Having stolen items: UMS student from China fined

Kota Kinabalu: A university student from China was slapped with a RM4,000 fine or spend four months behind bars for having stolen items belonging to a tourist.Zhang Kun, 23, admitted before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to having a mini iPad, a digital camera and a backpack worth RM3,500 belonging to one Huang Ruixue of China at 1.30pm on Sept 23 in a room at the Cititel Hotel here.Inspector Isfandiar Jasdi, prosecuting, told the court that Huang lodged a police report that her belongings had gone missing from her hotel room.

Counsel Aida Jaafar Mad Ariff, who represented Zhang, requested for a fine on the grounds that he is a student of Universiti Malaysia Sabah and had no family members in Sabah.Aida applied that no custodial sentence be imposed on Zhang, who was a first offender, as it would affect his study here because he wanted to renew his visa.She applied for a RM1,000 fine, adding that all stolen items were recovered.Zhang committed the offence under Section 411 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to five years or fine, or both, on conviction.

Meanwhile, Zhang claimed trial to another charge of stealing a handphone and 10,000 Renminbi from a hotel here.He allegedly stole the properties belonging to one Jiang Da at 2pm on Sept 13 in a room of Hotel Tabung Haji in Sembulan.

The court set Oct 20 for case management and released Zhang on a bail of RM1,000 in one surety.In the same court, two local men pleaded not guilty to stealing a laptop belonging to a hospital here.Mohd Zaidin Timin, 28, and Zawawi Johari, 22, were accused of stealing the RM2,000 gadget in a seminar room on the seventh floor of the Women's and Children's Hospital in Likas at 4.15am on Oct 4.The court offered them bail at RM2,000 in two sureties each pending case management on Nov 9.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

The duo who were represented by counsel Dominic Chew were charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to 10 years on conviction.Chief Inspector Lim Swee Beng also prosecuted.
