Ex-T'gganu YB shot dead after Friday prayers

MARANG: Former Alor Limbat state assemblyman Alias Abdullah, 51, was shot dead at his home in Kampung Alor Limbat Bukit Payong Marang after Friday prayers, here, Friday.Terengganu Police Chief Datuk Rosli Ab Rahman, who confirmed this, said police were still investigating the incident.

"Police are still investigating from various aspects and I have directed my staff to get the full report on the incident," he said when contacted here Friday.

In the 2pm incident, the victim, who was in the kitchen, was said to have been approached by an unknown man on a motorcycle who fired a gunshot which hit his left cheek.

Alias was then rushed to the Bukit Payung health clinic by his neighbour Mohd Zuraini Mamat where he was given emergency treatment at about 2.15pm but succumbed to his injuries.

Alias had been assemblyman for the Alor Limbat state constituency for two terms from 2004 before losing to PAS candidate, Ariffin Deraman during the 13th General Election held in May 2013.

His last political post was as Alor Limbat UMNO branch chief.

Before becoming the people's representative, Alias who leaves behind a wife and four children, was the Head of Terengganu's state Prosecution Unit (Deputy Public Prosecutor/Senior Federal Counsel) from May 1, 1997 to Nov 18, 1999.

In KUALA TERENGGANU, Marang Police Chief Suhaimi Mohd Ali said police had launched a manhunt code named Ops Tutup to track down the suspect.

"Moments after receiving the report, we launched the manhunt," he said when met at Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ) Forensic Unit.

According to him, police were still conducting further investigations on the shooting incident and that the body was brought to HSNZ for a post-mortem.

Earlier, Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman, who rushed down to the clinic where Alias succumbed to his injuries, said he was shocked and deeply saddened by what happened and urged the police to bring the murderer to justice without delay.

"This is terribly schocking. Alias' death is a big loss to Terengganu because he had contributed immensely to the state, especially in legal matters," said Ahmad Razif, who also extended his condolences to Alias' family members. – Bernama

He also urged the police to look into this culture of murdering people because on Aug 10, a retired teacher Mat Jusoh Ali, 56, was shot dead in front of his house in Taman Nor Bakti, Padang Midin, Bukit Payung.
