Mafi sports carnival

Kota Kinabalu: "It is our hope that the hosting of sports activities such as this carnival can help to strengthen our determination towards our respective job and responsibility in our efforts to make this ministry an excellent one."This was said by the Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Yahya Hussin in his opening speech during the launching of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry (Mafi) sports carnival at the Badminton Hall in Likas Sports Complex on Sunday.

"We need to inculcate the sporting culture in our daily routine besides leading a healthier lifestyle for our own wellbeing and progress," Yahya who is also the Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry said.

In congratulating the organising committee for their efforts Yahya added that the hosting of this carnival was timely as it coincide with the nationwide celebration of National Sports Day on Saturday.

Eleven kinds of sports — badminton, football, futsal, golf, table tennis, bowling, netball, sepaktakraw, volleyball, dart and carom – will be competed in the more than a month-long carnival until Nov 22.

Four departments under the ministry – Department of Agriculture, Department of Fisheries, Department of Irrigation and Drainage, Department of Veterinary Services and Animal Industry – and its three agencies Sabah Fisheries and Fishermen Corporation (Ko-Nelayan), Rural Development Corporation and Sabah Rubber Industry Board are involved.

Its organising secretary, Celestine Jetony said, the main objective of the carnival is to foster a closer rapport among the staff of Mafi and its departments and agencies through sports activities which can also contribute positively to physical and mental health besides promoting a healthier lifestyle.

Also present were directors and senior officials from departments and agencies under the ministry.
