Extremism will break BN up: MCA

Kuala Lumpur: Barisan Nasional (BN) will fall apart should extremism set in, MCA warned, but said the destruction of the long-ruling multi-racial coalition was the worst-case scenario that has not happened yet."If, I say if, there is one day we run out of means, where the BN spirit is gone, where moderation has lost to extremism, pluralism lost to theocracy; upon reaching that time, BN will fall apart," MCA deputy president Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said in his speech during the MCA Youth AGM.

"Sixty years of cooperation will be destroyed and this partnership will come to the point beyond resurrection. The above hypothetical proposition is based on the worse (sic) case scenario. Now is not the worst yet," he added.

He also said MCA will be firm in the Chinese component party's policing of Umno and will not allow certain factions within the Malay nationalist party to do as they please that may affect the coalition's stability.

"Therefore our president has rightly indicated MCA's stand, especially our dissatisfaction with certain quarters in Umno.

"We cannot allow certain quarters in Umno to do whatever they want and destroy our stability. We are committed to play our role in BN and the Cabinet to pull things back on track," said Wee, without naming names.

Wee also cautioned MCA Youth members against acting "recklessly" at a time when many of their peers around them may be "complaining" about various issues.

"Therefore, dear comrades, please do not act recklessly in the heat of the moment. MCA Youth has always been the vanguard of our party.

"You are all passionate young people. I understand your grievances when young people around you are complaining," he said.

The Minister in the Prime Minister's department also assured his party members that MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai would work towards strengthening the party and subsequently return BN "back on track."

"Do not overreact. I assure you that the MCA will play it by ear, our president will make the greatest efforts to maintain our bottom line in BN and to pull BN back on track. When we are making our case in BN and the Cabinet, when we want to set things right internally, our party needs your strong backing," he said.

Wee's remarks came after the government-sanctioned pro-Malay #Merah169 rally last month that saw the involvement of Umno leaders like Sungai Besar chief Datuk Jamal Md Yunos.

Jamal also said on Wednesday that there will be a "red" protest against the PKR-led Selangor government in Ampang on October 18, adding that the rally will be attended by members of Chinese and Indian NGOs as well.

Meanwhile, Wee said the Chinese community might lose their political power in the next general election if they continue to support the opposition.

He reminded the Chinese community that Umno is very likely to remain as the single largest party in the Parliament in the upcoming general election.

"Hence, it is important for them (Chinese community) to ponder their choices carefully or risk jeopardising the interests of the Chinese community as a whole," Wee said.

Wee then reminded the Chinese community that the saying of the Chinese community being the "kingmaker" is a mere self-deception as the "kingmaker" has always been the Malays and the indigenous communities.

Wee explained that it is not possible to have changes in government without the support of the Malay and indigenous communities.

"If the Chinese community still sees themselves as the 'kingmaker' and continues to vote for the opposition in full force in the next general elections, the likely outcome is that the Chinese will stay in the opposition.

"Ultimately, we will have a polarised country and the interests of the Chinese community will be sacrificed," he explained.

At the same time, Wee also pointed out that DAP has failed to perform and contribute to the Chinese community despite having the strong support from them.

"The continuous support for DAP has created an uphill task for MCA to fight for the interest of the Chinese community within Barisan National.

"However, no matter how hard it is for us, we remain committed in fighting for the Chinese community," he said.
