Kota Kinabalu: Sabah returned with one silver and seven bronze medals in the 30th Artistic Gymnastics Sports Excel and National Championship in Bukit Jalil from Oct 9-11.The sole silver was won by the girl's team (13-15 years) consisting Felicity Grace Sew Pei En, Angelica Lo Xin Yue and Ethel Lim Yi in the sports excel event.

Four of the bronze medals came from Mohd Azre Mohd Nasir (Vault), Liew Jun Xiang (Individual Overall), Felicity Grace (Individual Overall) and Angelica Lo Xin Yue (Individual Overall) in the national championship while the rest were delivered by Nicole Wong Li Jing, Tan Mui Kun and Elvinna Johenes in the girl's team (9-10 years), Hebbie Lee Shing Aii, Cherfie Resie Chong, Jill Avie Horatio, Jennisia Jiniol, Amanda Wong Yeah Chean, Nur Farisha Atiqah Shuali in the girl's team (11-12) and Allan Leong Wei Kin, Liew Jun Xiang, Hirzi Bariqi Yaakob, Vincent Iquan Tung in the boy's team (11-12).

Team Manager Liew Tong Ee, who was also the technical delegate in the competition, said it was a very tough outing for the state team.

"Other states improved a lot as they have gymnastics class in their respective sports school such as Bukit Jalil, Bandar Penawar from Johor and one from Pahang.

"Sabah should have started earlier to have gymnastics in Sekolah Sukan Malaysia Sabah (SSMS) here in Sepanggar in order to compete with them, " he said.

On the team's prospect in the Kuching Sukma next year, Liew hoped the Sabah Sports Council will consider sending a full team for both boys and girls.

"We are trying to convince the Sabah Sports Council to sent a full team. At the moment, we only have three boys selected for Sukma namely Brandon Denoley Louis who skip the competition over the weekend because of examination, Lazarus Philip who finished 5th in Pommel Horse and Azre who grabbed a bronze in Vault. We still need another three boys and six girls to form the full team for both boy's and girl's team event in Sukma."

He also thanked Sabah Sports Council, Sabah Gymnastic Association, schools and the parents for their support in the competition.

Meanwhile, coaches for the Sabah team were Zamri Din and Tong Ee for the girls teams and Noraini Jamlan and Azri Omar for the boys.
