Kota Kinabalu: THE Pan Borneo Highway, which will start construction soon, would open a new chapter in the history of Sabah, transforming the face of the State and significantly boosting its economic growth.Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said similar to how the Wild West once flourished because of the construction of railroads, he foresees similar impact on Sabah's economic and social development.

"With Pan Borneo Highway and railroad, we can open new towns because of better connectivity with the new highway. Sabah's future is bright and we want to prove that Sabahans had made the right decision to gain independence through Malaysia and they made the right decision in choosing BN," he said when opening the PBRS First Triennial Delegates Conference.

Najib said the construction of the toll-free 2,000km highway will be given to local contractors after he discussed the matter with Musa.

"This is to ensure that all Sabah contractors who are involved will get a piece of the action," he said.

He also expressed his pleasure with the level of cooperation shown by the State government under the leadership of Musa with the Federal government.

A lot of key decisions, he said, have been made after respectful discussions between both parties to ensure that those decisions would benefit both sides as it is unfair to arrive at a decision that would benefit only one party.

Meanwhile, Najib also gave his assurance to continue ensuring that rural development, specifically in Sabah, be given high priority to ensure the people in the State were not marginalised from national development.

He said the people in the rural areas were the backbone and strength of BN, and who had given their full trust in BN to continue helming the government until today.

In this regard, Najib said it was the duty of BN to ensure the people in the rural areas received full attention so that their welfare and wellbeing continued to be cared for.

"For that reason, in the 2016 Budget which I tabled recently, I stressed and prioritised rural development (including in Sabah)," he said.

Najib said the 2016 Budget, which contained 130 touch points, among others, outlined provisions for rural development, including a RM1.4 billion allocation to upgrade 700 kilometres of road nationwide, RM878 million for electricity supply projects involving 10,000 houses and RM568 million for piped water supply projects.

In Sabah, Najib said, Other than the Pan Borneo Highway, the 2016 Budget has also stressed on other needs in Sabah and Sarawak including economy-class domestic air transportation for the Rural Air Services routes being exempted from the Goods and Services Tax, 1Malaysia Mobile Clinic Service in the interior and uniformity in the prices of goods.
