Tan: Aggressive push for investment to continue
Kota Kinabalu: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Raymond Tan said the government will continue its efforts to aggressively promote the State in order to attract more investors."The State government, in collaboration with the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, will also organise trade and investment missions to foreign countries. This would be done through the hosting of high-profile international and domestic events," he said.

Tan, who is also Industrial Development Minister, said this in his speech delivered by his Assistant Minister Datuk Bolkiah Ismail, at the Sabah Industry Excellence Awards (SIEA) 2014/2015, here, on Thursday.

Tan said the Sabah Economic Development and Investment Authority (Sedia) would continue to aggressively promote foreign investment flow into the State, in line with government initiatives to boost regional trading and secure business opportunities, particularly in manufacturing and related industries.

He added that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) also play important roles in contributing to gross domestic product (GDP) growth.

"In a market-driven economy like Malaysia, the private sectors play a very important and crucial role in steering the industrial and economic sector as a whole.

"In this respect, SMEs play a prominent role in development of the business value chain and are expected to contribute about 41 per cent to the GDP towards 2020," he said.

Tan reassured that the State government recognises and appreciates the efforts, involvement and contribution of industry players, especially the private sector, in the progress and growth of the industrial sector.

"Hence, in recognition and appreciation of the industrial players and captains in developing industry, the industry excellence award for various categories, basing on their size, will be awarded to winners specifically to honour these players," he said.

At the awards ceremony, beverage company Life Water Industries Sdn Bhd was awarded the best local company with annual sales of between RM25 million and RM100 million, while food and textile company Kumpulan BTC Bhd won the RM10 million to RM25 million annual sales category.

Seasoning product manufacturer Twinine Sdn Bhd was best local company with annual sales of under RM10 million, while the first handmade chocolate maker in Sabah, Simply Chocolate Sdn Bhd, won the category for annual sales of less than RM5 million.

All four companies each received RM5,000 cash, a certificate and a trophy.

Meanwhile, Kina Roof Industries (S) Sdn Bhd received RM3,000 cash prize, a certificate and a trophy for winning the Most Promising Company Award.

Also present at the ceremony were Permanent Secretary to the Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry, Datuk Ginun Yangus, SIEA Chairman Thomas K.P. Wong, CEO of POIC Sabah Sdn Bhd, Datuk Pang Teck Wai and Datuk Peter Thien.
