Najib to give statement on RM2.6 billion to MACC soon
Kuala Lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak says he will give a statement on the RM2.6 billion political fund case to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) soon.He said Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali had told him that he was required to give a statement to the MACC in connection with the case.

"I will do so and give my statement pertaining to the political fund, to the MACC in the very near future.

"I will cooperate in giving the statement to the MACC so that the investigation can be completed as soon as possible," said Najib, who is also Umno President, in a statement here, Thursday.

He said it had always been his wish to give full cooperation in the investigation as it had led to various allegations.

Meanwhile, in JOHOR BARU, MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Abu Kassim.

Mohamed said the commission will record a statement from Najib soon in connection with the investigations into SRC International and the RM2.6 billion political fund.

He said the commission had contacted the Prime Minister's Office over the matter and the Prime Minister had agreed to have his statement recorded.

"The MACC is waiting for a date to interview him (Najib) on the issues related to the investigations."

Abu Kassim said this to reporters after the passing-out parade involving MACC officers who completed the Basic Training Programme Series 16 No. 2/2024 and Series 17 No. 3/2014, Thursday.

He said the MACC targeted to complete its investigation into the SRC International case before the year-end on condition it could have access to two SRC International directors, who were important witnesses but were still abroad, for their statements to be recorded.

"Nevertheless, this does not prevent the MACC from calling the Prime Minister to give his statement," he added.

According to Abu Kassim, the MACC was conducting the investigations covering all aspects and its officers were working very hard to complete the investigation papers within the time targeted.

On the investigation into the RM2.6 billion political fund, he said the MACC needed more time to complete the investigation as most of the transactions occurred overseas, and this required the process of Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA).

"The MACC needs time to obtain the cooperation of several parties overseas."

Abu Kassim said while the MACC wanted to quickly complete the investigations into SRC International and the RM2.6 billion political fund, it would not compromise with regard to the evidence and important witnesses.

He also said that the MACC would inform on the status of the investigations from time to time to the independent bodies monitoring the commission.

As an independent commission, he said, the MACC took into consideration the hopes of all parties concerned, including the Conference of Rulers which had issued a statement on the matter in early October.

"The MACC assures that the investigations will be carried out independently, transparently and professionally based on the MACC Act 2009," he added.

Previously, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said the department would answer all questions on allegations that the RM2.6 billion had been deposited into the Prime Minister's personal bank account during the Dewan Rakyat sitting on Dec 3.

She was reported as saying that it was better to accumulate all the questions on the matter and give the reply on the final day of the sitting.

"Whether the Prime Minister or anyone (else) from JPM (the Prime Minister's Department) answers, it is still the prerogative of the Prime Minister," she had said.
