Six MoUs signed at HoB conference

Kota Kinabalu: Six Memorandums of Understanding and a Letter of Intent between the Sabah Forestry Department and NGOs and institutions on partnership programmes were signed at the launching of the International Conference on the Heart of Borneo Wednesday at Sutera Magellan, witnessed by Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Musa Aman. These include a partnership KiTA (Kinabatangan – Corridor of Life Tourism Operators Association) and SFD on the establishment of a historic K-COL Riparian Patrol Unit in Kinabatangan River operated largely by SFD but KiTA will pay the wages of the patrol boat rangers over the next five years.

The Boat Patrol will focus on monitoring riparian activities in the river on a daily basis to protect riparian forests.

Other MoUs include Carnegie Institution of Washington USA where the scope of cooperation is to conduct the Carnegie Airborne Observatory (CAO) Campaign to produce high resolution mapping of Sabah's forests, as well as to establish a framework for collaboration, knowledge transfer and training in remote sensing methodologies and data use in providing information on carbon stocks, forest and landscape structure, forest condition, and biodiversity in Sabah, Malaysia.

WWF-Malaysia also signed a MoU to collaborate with SFD and CAO by providing financial support amounting to US$50,000 for the CAO campaign.

Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO)'s MoU with SFD and CAO involves collaboration to provide financial support amounting US$300,000 for the CAO Campaign , as well as to facilitate the RSPO' related activities in Sabah.

The MoU between Germany based Rhino and Forest Fund E.V. involves restoration of parts of Tabin Wildlife Reserve and the establishment of forest and wildlife corridors between Tabin and neighbouring forest lands.

TSH Resources Berhad also signed an MoU with SFD on its decision on the reclassification of over 28,370 hectares of the Licensed Area (Meliau Range) into a Class 1 Protection Forest Reserve and the establishment of its management committee.

Meanwhile, a Letter of Intent was also signed between SFD and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) and KTS Plantation Sdn Bhd to develop a tripartite MoU (SFD-UMS-KTPS) within six months for joint long term research, training and academic partnerships in sustainable forest management within Segaliud-Lokan Forest Reserve (FMU19B).
