Kota Kinabalu: Eleven Sabah special needs (OKU) athletes will represent the country in the 8th Asean Para Games in Singapore from Dec 3-9.After successfully hauling a total of nine gold, five silver and one bronze medals at the Games last year, the state contingent has set a target to win 10 or more gold medals at this year's Games.

"I believe in our athletes' abilities to win more gold medals compared to last year as they have been training hard all year and hope they can achieve the target to show the results of their training," said Sabah People with Disability Sports and Recreation Association (Pesron) President, Tan Hwa Koon.

Among the 11 state athletes, seven have already been confirmed by the association with Bukit Jalil Sports School student and last year's triple gold medal winner, Doriah Paulus, leading the contingent's challenge.

While her schoolmate, Aderin Majurin, who is also 2014 double gold medal winner, will be making his appearance at the Games.

Another double gold medal winner, Shamli Waidi is also selected into the national squad, including both silver medallists, Eryanto Bahtiar and Saiful Dawang whereas Felicia Mikat and Jacklon Ganding will be making their Games debut.

However, previous Games gold medallists, Sahruddin Mappa and Sabarudding Bacho are not selected for the trip to Singapore.

"The other four athletes will be named after our training camp which is currently being held at Likas Sports Complex until end of this week and another one at Bukit Jalil Sports School from Nov 20-28," said Tan. The athletes will be accompanied by contingent's coaches, Tony Sawan and Azniz Azilah for the trip to assemble with the national team before heading to Singapore.

Meanwhile, the association on Tuesday paid a courtesy call on State Youth and Sports Minister, Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan at his office in Wisma Muis to brief him about the contingent's participation for the Games.

"I hope our OKU athletes will perform to their utmost best during the Games and prove that they are capable of competing hand-to-hand with other normal state athletes here.

"If last year in Myanmar we were able to haul nine gold medals from eight athletes, this year I believe we can win more as there will be 11 athletes participating," said Tawfiq during the flag-handing over ceremony, Tuesday.

He added that the Ministry through Sabah Sports Council will continue to prepare incentives to the gold medal winners as a booster for the participating athletes to do well in the Games. Also present at the ceremony was Sabah Sports Council Director, Terrance Pudin.
