High number of PR applicants

Kota Kinabalu: The number of people seeking Permanent Resident (PR) status in Sabah is very high and applicants have to go through a long waiting period due to the process of screening, thorough checking and verifying the necessary document for the application.The Chief Minister's Department said this in response to a question by MCA Luyang Assemblyman Dr Hiew King Cheu who asked the Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman on the possibility of speeding up the approval for PR of foreign and West Malaysian wives or husbands of Sabahans residing in Sabah.The Department said those who were given PR status by the Sabah Government is very limited and is not a right which can be claimed by any individual who are not Sabahan.

However, the Department assured that it would review and consider various ways to accelerate the approval of relevant applications. Hiew urged the State and Federal Government to work out a speedy process on the approvals. "They have to chop their passport every year in order for them to stay in Sabah. Some of them already have been staying in Sabah without PR for over 40 years, and many have become grandparents. "If this can be done, this show that the BN government is a caring government and will surely receive more support from the people," he said.
