Sandakan: People in rural areas who are computer illiterate to qualify for a driver's licence can count on the Road Transport Department to cut them some slack. Computer illiterate Junyul Tahil, from Kg. Sibugal Besar, who became the first recipient in Sabah to qualify for his driving licence, with some special help from RTD, will attest to that.

"We are grateful to the Skuad Muda 1JPJ for being a medium in highlighting our problem," said Junyul's son, Jiman Junyul, 32, in thanking the department.

He said his father had been driving the past 10 years, working at an oil palm estate but because he was computer illiterate, he was not able to obtain his licence after failing. His plight came to light when his youngest child, a student at the Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris in Putrajaya approached the Skuad Muda 1JPJ for assistance.

They expressed hope the department would consider the issue faced by their father and prompted by this, officers and personnel from the department went down to the field to personally meet Junyul at his home before making arrangements for him to obtain the driving licence.

First time drivers are required to undergo a driving course at any registered driving institute after which they must pass several tests which includes a table test before they can qualify for a driver's licence.

RTD Deputy Director-General (Operation) Dato' Yusoff Ayob, said the department's role is not only to enforce traffic law, but also to assist those finding it difficult to pass the table test because they are computer illiterate.

But he said the department's initiative to help the community in qualifying for driving licences is not a shortcut approach as it requires applicants to go through the regular process at driving institutes, only in a different way.

Yusoff said among assistance given is to help those who are computer illiterate apply to sit for an oral test where they will be interviewed by RTD officers to see if they are qualified.

"We want to ensure all driving license holders understand traffic rules and regulations," he told a media conference after officiating at the "Skuad Muda 1JPJ Janji Ditepati Licence Presentation" programme at the Sandakan RTD branch here, on Monday.

Also present were Sabah RTD Director Mohd Suhaili Mohd Taufek and RTD Sandakan Branch Chief Romie Matalip.

"Driving without a licence could cause us to feel nervous every time we see RTD and police personnel on roadblock inspections, compared to driving with a valid driving licence without fear," said Yusoff.

"Our efforts will not stop here, in fact we will continue to assist the people through various programmes," he said and urged those facing similar problems to go to the nearest RTD office and meet with his officers who are there to assist.
