Landslip-clearing tragedy
Penampang: A heavy machinery operator was killed while clearing a landslide when a wheel-loader rolled over backwards, trapping him, at Jalan Penampang-Tambunan, near Kg Kivatu, Tuesday. According to fellow Indonesian colleague Joseph, Hendrik Mangasik of Kg Nambazan, 42, was operating the machinery up the hillslope when its engine suddenly stalled.

Hendrik leaves behind three daughters and a son, the eldest 25 and the youngest only three.

District Police Chief DSP Rosley Hobden said a police team went to the scene after being alerted at about 10.15am.

Personnel from the Penampang Fire and Rescue Department led by Operations Chief Rudy and Benny Lim also rushed to the scene to try to save the trapped worker.

After stabilising the machine with an excavator, the rescue team used a hydraulic cutter to cut through before extricating the unconscious worker.

The Fire and Rescue Emergency Medical Response team proceeded to stabilise Hendrik and applied a cervical collar before handing him over to hospital paramedics who pronounced him dead at the scene.

The body was sent for post mortem and the case is being probed under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Meanwhile it was learnt the land where the tragedy occurred was under construction to remove particles following recent landslides in the area.

It was learnt that the landowner had applied for the area to be flattened to prevent another landslide.

The contractor appointed to facilitate removal of earth was issued a licence valid from Nov 13 to Dec 31 this year to remove a volume of 1,200 cubic metres.

The district had witnessed illegal hill-cutting with at least two raids reported in Kg Mahandoi on Nov. 13 by enforcement units from the Land and Survey Department.

Hill cutting and poor drainage were blamed for a series of recent massive floods here and in the State Capital earlier.
