Kota Kinabalu: Pacos Executive Director Anne Lasimbang urged Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan to reconsider the decision on building the Kaiduan Dam. "The area is one of the last frontiers in Sabah which is so beautiful," she said. "The project is violence against the people who are living there as well as the environment in that area."

"To the people of KK who will benefit from the project, that is water, please visit the area and see what the loss will be to our future," Anne said.

Pairin, who is also Infrastructure Development Minister, said the State Cabinet had looked at several alternatives for water resources following protests from the community there and NGOs such as Pacos but decided to carry on with one condition – that the results of the Special Environment Impact Assessment and Feasibility Study must be tabled in Cabinet.

A Steering Committee also conducted a Social Impact Assessment in May to prioritise the affected community.

The dam, first proposed in 1987 by the Asian Development Bank, will provide the long term water needs of Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Putatan, Papar and Tuaran Districts up to 2050, he said.

Pairin said alternatives considered included drawing water direct from the river for treatment but found that volume would be limited and unreliable.
