Sabah to have own Chess Academy soon: SCA President

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah is going to have its own Chess Academy in the near future to develop the sport in the State, according to Sabah Chess Association (SCA) President Muammar Julkarnain.In his closing speech at the Tamu Gadang Chess Open held over the weekend, Muammar announced that there would be a chess clinic to be held in early December as part of the plan to set up Sabah Chess Academy and to develop chess in Sabah.

He encouraged parents to take the opportunity by bringing their children to meet Sabahan FIDE-certified Chess Instructors during the clinic as SCA will be organising Sabah Juniors Chess Championship 2015 and Sabah Age Group Chess Tournament 2015 by year end.

He also announced that Sabah has been selected by Malaysian Chess Federation (MCF) to be the host for Malaysian National Closed Chess Championship in March 2016.

"As preparation for the event, there would be FIDE chess tournaments with classical time control to be held in late December and January.

"I hope Sabah players will win the championship and earn an opportunity to represent the country in the Chess Olympiad 2016 to be held in Baku, Azerbaijan."

Meanwhile, Ali Akbar Nadzrif won the Tamu Gadang Chess Open title and cash prize of RM1,000 with second and third placing going to Faizal Andin and Kamino Marino.

The women title was won by Vianna Dennia Daniel while Muammar, a post-graduate student at UMS won the UMS category.

Abel Justine took the under-18 title followed by Jennica Fay Jossly and Ronald Majin.

Under-15 title went to Afzan Hamizan Abdul Rahman with Aaron Justine in second place followed by Nur Ae-Man Asman in third, while the top three places in the under-12 category went to Erroy Casper Felix, Muhd Ammar Akmal Mareef and Khairie Haziq Kamarudin.

A total of 76 participants took part in the FIDE Rated tournament held at University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) campus in conjunction with the 17th Tamu Gadang UMS which was jointly organised by SCA and UMS.
