Kuala Lumpur: The action plan to empower single mothers, which was launched on Oct 22, consists of 19 strategic measures based on three main pillars to raise their economic and living standards, the Dewan Rakyat was told Tuesday. Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun said the three main pillars were improving the social welfare, enhancing the implementation of research, and coordinating the development of single mothers in the country.

"A task force was set up to decide on several matters including the establishment of a lab for profiling to ensure all single mothers receive assistance and the setting up of a technical committee to discuss the involvement of the private sector and institutions of higher learning.

"These issues will be discussed in the Women Advisory and Consultation Council meeting," she said when replying to a question by Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff (PAS-Rantau Panjang).

Siti Zailah had wanted to know on the number of single mothers, orphans and senior citizens in the country according to race and the benefits they had received so far.

Chew said based on the census conducted by the Department of Statistics, there were 235,240 single mothers in the country in 2010, in which 137,416 were Malays; l48,458 (Chinese) and 19,717 (Indians).

She said a task force to empower senior citizens was also established to ensure that 2.82 million senior citizens in the country would carry out active ageing activities.

To date, there is a total of 150,073 orphans throughout the country, she said.
