Sandakan Regatta meet a roaring success

Sandakan: The Sandakan Regatta cum Sandakan River Race Sabah Closed 2015 meet at the Sandakan Yatch Club (SYC), here, over the weekend was a huge success, according to Sabah Sailing Association (Saila) President, Christopher Chin during the prize presentation ceremony at SYC.Sandakan Yacht Club (SYC) staged a successful regatta which saw the participation of a record 70 sailors from throughout Sabah.

The participants were from Sandakan Yacht Club (SYC), Kinabalu Yacht Club (KYC), Tawau Yacht Club (TYC), Navy Yacht Club Kota Kinabalu (NYCKK) and Saila.

On the Borneo Interport Regatta which SYC Commodore Daniel Liaw had in his speech indicated SYC's plan to revive, Chin said it was a prestigious sailing competition previously held annually and participated by sailors from Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei.

The previous edition of the Borneo Interport Regatta was participated by Kinabalu Yacht Club, Kuala Belait Boat Club, Brunei, Royal Brunei Yacht Club, Piasau Boat Club Miri Sarawak, Sandakan Yacht Club, Sarawak Sailing Association, Sabah Sailing Association, Navy Yacht Club KK, Sepanggar and Tawau Yacht Clu.

Liaw said this year's regatta was being held in conjunction with the annual Sandakan Festival for the first time which included the Sandakan River Race sponsored by SYC Honorary Vice Commodore, James Pua.

Daniel thanked State Youths and Sport Minister, Datuk Haji Tawfiq Datuk Haji Abu Bakar Titingan, Sandakan Municipal Council President, Datuk James Wong, Saila, police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, Royal Malaysian Navy, participants and sponsors for helping to make the regatta a success.

First Admiral Dato Ahmad Abdullah, the Commander of the Sandakan Navy Base, commended Sandakan Yacht Club for its efforts in promoting sailing in Sandakan.

"In fact this event could be considered as part of the National Blue Ocean Strategy (NBOS) as it involved many government agencies and departments," Ahmad pointed out.

"Sailing is a sport that is popular locally and internationally and sailors produced by Sandakan Yacht Club have brought glory to Sabah as well as the country. It is also one that promotes a healthy lifestyle as well as hones a sailor's skills, discipline, communication and team spirit," he added.

Ahmad said sailing is a sport that is well suited for youths as it instils in them all the good qualities required of a leader. It is also one that a family can participate in and this is good for family bonding.

Also present at the event were organizing chairman cum SYC Rear Commodore, James Leong, Vice Commodore Richard Lim, Secretary, Fred Wong, Treasurer, Jeremy Chan, committee members, Paul Wong, Chin Nam Hong, Norman Sim, Melissa Eng and SYC Sailing sub-committee adviser Lim Kim Hock.

The Optimist Marathon Overall title was won by Muhammad Afiq Irsyad Adam followed by Mohammad Sahieran Raiman and Syahzharoul Aiman Rozaiman.

For the Optimist Marathon A division, it was won by Muhammad Afiq Irsyad Adam followed by Ambigivalli Grant and Samuel Wong.

The Optimist Marathon B division was won by Mohammad Sahieran Raiman followed by Syahzharoul Aiman Rozaiman and Mohammad Azmi Mohd Kahmis.

For Optimist Marathon C division, Muh Asnawi Iqbal Adam took the title with Tim Wong Xiang in second.

Laser Standard Marathon Overall was won by Mohamad Mostamam Ismail, followed by Ang Tsun Kiat and Muhammad Daniel Iqbal Muhammad Samsuri.

For the Laser Overall Marathon Overall, it was won by Mohd Zahimul Hakim Zainal with Vedhavalli Grant and Adele Lim Sze Miaw in second and third respectively.

For Laser 4.7 Marathon Overall, Afwan Amir Harum came first with Long Jade Ying in second and Nicole Chan in third.

For the International 470 Marathon Overall, first was Zaifah Zairie Hardy Zainol/Muh Hafizzal Zailan followed by Muhammad Danial/Long Wan Ying and Wan Mohd Fazeli Wan Zin/Tania Beverly William.

For Novice Final Overall, first was Laurenz Leonardo Daim while second went to Nur Awatif Safri followed by Carven Lau Jhing Wen.

For Optimist Final Overall category, the winner was Muhammad Afiq Irsyad Adam, followed by Syahzharoul Aiman Rozaiman and Mohammad Sahieran Raiman.

In the Optimist Final A division, Muhammad Afiq Irsyad Adam, Ambigavalli Grant and Gabrielle Marygrace Yong Poquita came first, second and third respectively.

In the Optimist Final B division, Syahzharoul Aiman Rozaiman emerged champion with Mohammad Sahieran Raiman in second and Mohammad Azmi Mohd Kahmis in third.

For Optimist Final C division, first was Muh Asnawi Iqbal Adam, followed by Tim Wong Xiang.

For Laser Standard Provisional Overall, first was Mohamad Mostamam Ismail, followed by Muhammad Daniel Iqbal Muhammad Samsuri and Ang Tsun Kiat.

For Laser Radial Final Overall, Vedhavalli Grant was first with Awang Hazirul Awang Tuah and Mohd Zahimul Hakim Zainal in second and third respectively.

For the Laser 4.7 Final Overall, first was Nicole Chan, followed by Afwan Amir Harun and Sharron Hung Siau Rou (SYC).

For International 470 Final Overall, first was Zaifah Zairie Hardy Zainol while Wan Mohd Fazeli Wan Zin and Muhamad Danial came in second and third respectively.

In the Sabah Closed 2015, the Optimist Novice Boy category was won by Laurenz Leonardo Daim, followed by Carven Lau Jhing Wen and Syazwi Thaqif Shahirul.

For the Optimist Novice Girl, first was Nur Awatif Safri followed by Zeti Irdina Zainal and Chow Yi Ling For the Optimist Senior Boy, first place was won by Muhammad Afiq Adam, followed by Syahzharoul Aiman and Mohd Aiman Adam.

In the Optimist Senior Girl category, first place was won by Gabrielle Marygrace, followed by Ambigavalli Grant and Dayang Nur Erhaziqah.
