TPPA will enhance compliance with GAP guidelines: Ahmad

SERDANG: Joining the Trans Pacific Partneship Agreement (TPPA) would enhance compliance with guidelines for Good Agricultral Practices (GAP) among local agriculture industry players to make them internationally competitive, says Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek."It's not a question of being ready or not, but to penetrate other markets, we need to improve our products by meeting international standards," the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister told reporters after opening the Malaysia International Agrotourism Exhibition (MIATE) here Thursday.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was reported as saying at the 27th Asean Summit and Related Summits in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday that Japan expects that under the TPPA, business opportunities in Malaysia and regional markets would grow in all sectors, including agriculture, fisheries and forestry.

Malaysia and 11 other nations – Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Singapore, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, the US and Vietnam – concluded the TPP negotiations on Oct 5, 2015.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Shabery said his ministry aims to increase the number of agrotourists from the current four per cent of total tourist arrivals to six per cent by 2020 through the construction of more homestays, cottages and bungalows in rice fields and other agricultural locations.
