Filipina, 23, jailed and fined for prostitution

Kota Kinabalu: A 23-year-old Filipina was sentenced to three weeks' jail and fined RM4,500 or three months' jail by the Magistrate's Court for soliciting for prostitution.Maris Dago Oc admitted before Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus to committing the crime at 10.30am on Nov 21 in a hotel room at Sadong Jaya.Inspector Isfandiar Jasdi, prosecuting, told the court that the police raided the place for vice activities and found a man together with a woman, later identified as Maris, who was half naked, in one of the rooms.

Police then seized exhibits in the room including RM150 and further investigation revealed that Maris had no valid identification document.Maris was charged under Section 372B of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to one year or fine or both on conviction.During mitigation, Maris said it was her first offence and that she was supporting her parents and siblings.Meanwhile, Maris and another seven foreigners were jailed by the Sessions Court for illegal entry.

Maris, Josua Sedoon, Saddam Aldas, Laling Hassan, Edmerlyn A.Valenzuela, Noriel Hasim, Masnih Istiban and Tindi Anyaman pleaded guilty before Judge Azreena Aziz to committing the offence at separate locations here between Nov 19 and Nov 23.Laling, Masnih and Tindi were each handed five months' jail while the rest were jailed four months.

The court also ordered the men caned once while the women were spared the whip.Earlier, the court was told that the foreigners had been staying in the State illegally for between five months and 24 years.The foreigners were all ordered to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving their sentence.
