Sandakan: A total of 430 turtle eggs were confiscated during an integrated operation conducted by the Sandakan Wildlife Department and the Sandakan Municipal Council at Bandar Sandakan here, on Friday. Sandakan Municipal Council Assistant Enforcement Officer Sairin Abdul Rahman said the turtle eggs were abandoned by the owner. He said the integrated operation involved three personnel from the Wildlife Department and six from the Municipal Council led by him.

On that note, Sairin said action can be taken against those found buying, selling or having turtle eggs.He said it is an offence under Section 41 (1) of the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997 which carries a fine of up to RM50,000 or a period of up to five years jail or both. The Wildlife Department had on Monday vowed to monitor and nab anyone caught selling turtle eggs on the sly. Despite being faced with an uphill task catching vendors red-handed, the department will carry out regular surveillance on the activity, especially in Sandakan.
