Sabah hosting next year's 14th Gemaputera Games

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Economic Development Corporation (Sedco) will host the 14th Gemaputera Games here on March 23 to 26 next year.A total of 14 contingents consisting of more than 2,000 athletes and officials from State Development Corporations nationwide will be participating in the biennial Games where Sedco Sabah last hosted it in 2002.The Games is introduced back in 1985 under the name Subtera Games before being replace with Gemaputera in 2014 after a four-year layoff. Among the sports competed in the Games' 14th edition are golf, netball, pool, dart, bowling, carom and futsal.

Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Raymond Tan Shu Kiah said Sabah has one of the best sports facilities and infrastructures in Malaysia which leads to the hosting of the championship."The main objectives of the games is to foster closer rapport and strengthen co-operation among corporations and agencies in the states. It would also bring economic benefits to the local industries such as hotels, restaurants and souvenir shops," he said."We have state-of-the-art golf courses, futsal arenas, netball as well as beautiful waters suitable for any water sports and majestic mountains to organise hiking sports like the Mount Kinabalu International Climbathon."These advantages must be put to good use as optimal possible to attract sportsmen and sportswomen from other states and countries .

Tan said in his speech delivered by Industrial Development Ministry Permanent Secretary, Datuk Hashim Paijan when officiating the 14th Gemaputera Games Logo and Official Website Launching at Hyatt Regency Hotel near here on Monday.Meanwhile, Sedco Sabah General Manager, Haji Pengiran Saifuddin Pg Tahir announced that Sedco will target seven gold medals in the upcoming Games.
