Tawau: Kota Kinabalu City Hall City Planning Department Director Alijus @ Mohd Ali Sipil has been appointed the new President of Tawau Municipal Council, replacing Datuk Ismail Mayakob who retired after holding the post the past six years.

The official handing over of duties was held at the Municipal Council hall, here, Thursday, witnessed by the Council's senior officers, councillors and heads of government departments.

In his speech, Alijus said he is ready to face the challenges and to serve in Tawau after receiving the mandate from Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman and called for greater cooperation from all parties.

"I hope you will render to me the support you have given to my predecessor because we need to work as one unit.

The same goes to our councillors who are our partners in administering Tawau," he said.

The 52-year old Alijus said he would continue the efforts which have been initiated by Ismail, while also making improvements where possible.

He said some of the projects started by Ismail will resume under his leadership such as the construction of Urban Transformation Centre (UTC), beautification of Tawau and construction of Bandar Sri Indah (BSI) bus terminal.

Additionally, he said, particular attention will be given to the reorganisation of the traffic flow in the district to make it more systematic and reduce traffic congestion in the town.

"I will also look into the need to increase parking spaces in town, which is mainly due to space constraints as we do not have a lot of empty lands. Therefore, we will plan to construct a building for this purpose, which I feel would be a personal challenge for me," he said.

Alijus was born in Kg Tomis, Tamparuli, and has a Masters degree in land administrative management from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM).
