73 Filipinos, Indonesians rounded up

Kota Kinabalu: A total of 73 people, comprising Filipinos and Indonesians were rounded up for documentation screening during an "Ops Cegah Jenayah" in four locations here, on Monday. The nine hour operation which ended at about 4am involved three officers and 39 personnel comprising city police and auxiliary police. The four locations were namely at the Inanam bus terminal, squatter settlement near the bus terminal, as well as in Kg. Cendrakasih and a construction site in Likas.

City Police Chief ACP M. Chandra on Monday said a total of 26 Filipinos and five Indonesians, aged between 19 and 40, were arrested during the operation, while four others were nabbed for drug related cases. A separate operation was also conducted by the Immigration Department at about 7.30pm last Tuesday. The operation called "Ops Ikrar Jaja" and "Ops Ikrar Kutip" was held at the night market in Inanam and Sinsuran and involved 14 officers and 33 Rela personnel led by Saidi Mohd Said following concerns raised over the presence of illegal immigrants monopolising these two locations. In the raid at the Inanam night market, a total of 213 people were inspected and out of this figure, a total of eight Filipinos and Indonesians were nabbed, while the raid at the Sinsuran night market saw the arrest of 14 out of 91 people inspected.

He said the on-going operation is also focused on employers who employ, harbour illegal immigrants and syndicates who smuggle illegal immigrants to the country, adding that action will be taken in accordance with the law without compromise.

A total of 18,874 people have been arrested for various Immigration offences to date this year and of this figure, 63 are employers.
