Kuala Lumpur: The Defence Ministry will not hesitate to blacklist contractors who fail to comply with conditions set for projects under the ministry, said its Minister, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein. He said such action was necessary after a contractor delayed a project to upgrade two housing blocks for Class G military personnel in Desa Tun Hussein Onn here.

"There are 160 units in the two blocks which can accommodate 160 military personnel...The project to upgrade Block E3 which started on Jan 29 last year should have been completed on July 15.

"Work on Block E4, which began on Aug 6, 2014 was scheduled to be completed on Jan 8, 2016 but until now, the two blocks are still not ready," he told reporters after making a surprise visit to the project site here.

Upgrading work on the blocks involved among others the installation of floor tiles, wardrobes and kitchen cabinets at a cost of RM5.7 million for Block E3 and RM5.5 million for Block E4.

Hishammuddin said the contractor had promised to complete the two projects in April this year.

"I understand, he may have his reasons ... But, regardless, the contractor must stick to his promise because I will not compromise when it involves military personnel welfare," he said.

As such, he said a special committee would be set up to monitor project development under the Defence Ministry including projects not completed as scheduled.

"With the challenging economic conditions and limited provisions, existing projects must be implemented, some contractors never got the chance, so those given the opportunity should deliver on time," he said.

Meanwhile, Hishammuddin said the ministry would expand school bus services across the country which was expected to benefit some 13,000 military children.

"Children of military personnel will no longer be transported to school in military trucks, previously only military children in the Klang Valley enjoyed , school bus facilities, he said. – Bernama.
