Kota Kinabalu: The State Government had approved allocations of RM6,487,000 to the Rural Development Corporation (KPD) to carry out 25 development projects which would benefit 3,408 target participants.Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Yahya Hussin said the projects include the Shiitake Mushroom Project, Boer Goat rearing, chicken farming and honey bee farming.

The agency is expected to produce 65 metric tonnes of fresh mushroom, 4,701 metric tonnes of chicken meat, 9.5 metric tonnes of pure honey, 45 metric tonnes of grapefruit and rear 3,244 Boer goats this year.

"A project to develop a farm for village chicken will be carried out this year, with the aim to produce high quality chicks which then would be distributed to KPD contractors and also to commercial poultry farmers in the State.

"Starting this year also, other than increasing the production of mushroom shiitake seedlings, KPD will also produce oyster mushroom seedlings to cater for the needs of oyster mushroom entrepreneurs in low land areas," he said.

He added that due to the increasingly challenging economic situation nowadays, project implementations must be planned meticulously so as to ensure they are cost efficient.

During the 11th Malaysia Plan, he said, KPD will focus on integrated project implementation as it would help reduce delivery cost especially in terms of logistic and monitoring.

"Through this approach, projects will be easily and effectively managed and would ensure their sustainability.

These projects include Mushroom Farming project at Km 54.2 and Km 70 on Jalan Keningau-Kimanis, benefiting 35 participants from Keningau district.

"KPD will also help to realise the government's policies in exploring new sources of economy in line with Malaysia Bioeconomy Transformation Programme," he said.

Towards that end, KPD will continue its research programme in agricultural bio-technology field such as processing of high quality downstream products.

Meanwhile, Sabah Rubber Industry Board (LIGS) had been allocated RM807,504,079 by the Federal government under the 11MP and this year alone, the government had allocated RM90,873,838 to develop 6,800 hectares of new land and rubber replanting programme to help 2,006 small stakeholders.

The agency will continue to manage 26,936 hectares of planted land under the 10th Malaysia Plan and train 1,600 smallholders.

"This year will be a challenging one for LIGS and smallholders in Sabah due to the low price of the commodity and the weakening of global economic growth. However, the government had introduced base prices for all rubber products to help our smallholders cope with the economic downturn," he said.

He congratulated the agency for managing to turn around a deficit of RM75m in 2010 and making a total profit of RM70m by 2014, rising from two-star rating to four-star rating under the Accountability Index.
