RM15mil for installation of electric wiring system in schools
Tawau: A total of RM15 million has been allocated for the installation of three-phase electric wiring system in all schools throughout the State, said Education Department Director Datuk Jame Alip. According to him, the allocation has already been channelled to the Sabah Project Team and a total of RM4 million has been spent on the project.

"The remainder will be spent this year and we will cooperate with the related party to ensure that no single phase wiring system is used at schools in the State," he said, adding that principals and headmasters have been urged to make sure that the facility is fully used at their schools.

Jame said the project was implemented due to the increase of electricity usage for example, computers, air-conditioners and photocopy machines.

He said this when handing donations to 84 students from several schools in the district who were affected by the fire at Kg Airport Lama on Jan 30 at SK Bandar Tawau's hall here, Wednesday.

He also advised headmasters and principals not to practice open burning at the school compound and to monitor the wiring system especially during the dry spell for safety reasons.

Earlier, he said the donations are from the State Education Department Welfare and Natural Disaster Fund, Sabah Women Teachers Association (Pewanis), Sabah Umno Youth, Sabah Teachers Union and District Education Office.

Meanwhile, Jame said the kindergarten where a mother had accidentally run over her daughter recently was operating according to the rules specified by the department.

Jame said the officers have visited the private kindergarten in Luyang, near Kota Kinabalu.

"The administration of the kindergarten is under the jurisdiction of the kindergarten but the licensing and safety monitoring is done by the department…and we saw that they had followed the specifications. So, it was an unfortunate accident," he said.

As such, he advised parents to be extra careful when they are driving in school areas and that school administrations should also observe this matter.

In the incident on Monday, a 36-year-old mother was reported to have run over her daughter, Megan Wong Shi Ting, 4, and three others including a teacher after she dropped her at the preschool.

Megan succumbed to her injuries at 10.10am at KPJ Hospital while another boy sustained injuries on his hips and a girl was traumatised and the 25-year-old teacher suffered a fractured hip as well as internal abdominal bleeding.

It was learnt that the woman unintentionally stepped on the accelerator of her car before shifting the gear into reverse.

In another development, Jame refuted the claims made by some headmasters and principals that they are forbidden from being interviewed by the press.

"No…I didn't forbid them. I'm open minded. It is better for the schools to respond to any issue or incident that happens in the school. There is no restriction unless things that are related to policies," he said.

He added there is no problem in sharing basic non-sensitive information, such as the number of students registering and so forth.

He was asked to comment on the issue of headmasters here who refused to cooperate and provide basic information on their schools to reporters and claimed that they were constrained from any communication with the press early this year.

Jame also advised the reporters to contact him directly to get the needed information should the principals or headmasters be reluctant to cooperate.
