Janet promoted to Permanent Secretary
Alor Setar: Deputy Permanent Secretary Janet Chee Ken Liam has been promoted to be Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Community Development and Consumer Affairs.Minister of Community Development and Consumer Affairs, Datuk Jainab Ahmad Ayid, when contacted, confirmed the promotion.

"There is still a lot of work to be done for the State. I wish to thank the Minister for her moral support," said Kota Kinabalu-born Chee who holds a Bachelor of Arts Joint (Honours) degree in Social Administration and Sociology, and a Master of Arts degree in Southeast Asian Politics from the University of Hull, England.

She joined the State Civil Service in 1986 as an administrative officer with the then Ministry of Social Services (forerunner of her current ministry). She was promoted to Deputy Permanent Secretary in 1997.

Over the last 30 years, Chee, a mother of two, has been actively involved in governmental bodies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

Currently, she is a Board Member of the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN), an ex-officio member of the Board of Management for Sabah Council of Social Services (MPMS) and a member of Kota Kinabalu City Hall's (DBKK) Environmental Action Committee.

In addition, Chee is the Treasurer and Life member of Pemadam Sabah, a Lay Partner of the Good Shepherd of Singapore and Malaysia, a member of Family Life Commission of the Catholic Archdiocese of Kota Kinabalu and a registered volunteer for Tzu Chi Foundation Malaysia (Recycle Programmes and Free Medical Clinics).

A Charter member of the Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu Pearl, she is also a panel speaker for outreach programmes for family, youth, women and children.

Previously, she had served as a member of the Sabah Women's Advisory Council (MPWS) and Secretary to the State Natural Disaster Relief Committee.

In welcoming Chee's career advancement, MPWS Chairperson Datuk Mariati Robert said the Council was delighted to see women professionals going up the ranks in the State Civil Service hierarchy.

"Women permanent secretaries are few and far in between. We wish her all the best in the course of executing her duties and responsibilities," she said.
