Kota Kinabalu: A total of 11,000 firefighters will be on duty to respond to any emergency during the Chinese New Year holiday period. Fire and Rescue Department Director-General Datuk Wira Wan Mohd Noor Ibrahim said they need all available personnel to curb accident rates which would normally spike by 10 per cent during the holiday season. "Only 20 per cent of our personnel will be allowed to take leave for the celebration while the remainder have been geared to face any eventuality during the holiday season which is just round the corner.ADVERTISEMENT "As accident rates would normally increase during festivities, I would advise people to be extra careful on the road or while having their open houses."They also need to avoid electrical overloads and ensure that their kitchens are in check," he said. He reminded the people to avoid open burning activities as it is one of the major causes of fire, especially during the dry season which is prone to bush and forest fires. Wan Mohd said this to reporters after closing the Training Course for Advanced Diploma in Fire Science, at the Fire and Rescue Academy Sabah, here, Friday.
