Tawau: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) foiled two attempts to smuggle out nearly 200 gas cylinders, Thursday, in the latest such attempt. Two jongkongs were detained and a total of 12 individuals comprising Malaysian and Indonesian nationals were arrested in the operations conducted off Tawau waters.

According to district MMEA enforcement chief Captain Anor Jaafar, the items carried by the two jongkongs, which also include cooking oils, fuel and flour, were estimated to be worth RM145,300.

Disclosing details, he said when the first jongkong was held, MMEA officers found a total of 98 filled gas cylinders, six gallons of diesel, seven drums of subsidized petrol, cooking oil and some construction materials such as a PVC hose and wires.

The boat skipper, three crew members including two women aged between 24 to 44 years were detained on suspicion of having in their possession doubtful travel documents.

In the second jongkong which was detained about 20 minutes later, Anor said officers found 95 gas cylinders, eight drums of diesel and one drum of petrol, 300 boxes of cooking oil, five boxes of wheat flour and some groceries.

Eight individuals were detained on suspicion of having doubtful travel documents.

He said three of the boat crew members were Malaysians. Also among those on the boat was a three- year-old girl.

He believed the smuggling attempts might have to do with high demand for fuel and goods in the neighbouring country in conjunction with the Chinese New Year festival.

He encouraged members of the public who have information about any smuggling attempts to contact MERS 999 or DM18 operation centre at 089-750116.
