Cop among two killed in Sandakan accidents
Sandakan: Two people, including a policeman, working at the Beluran police station, were killed in separate road accidents along Jalan Sandakan-Lahad Datu and Sandakan-Telupid road, on Thursday and Wednesday. In the first accident, 32-year-old Corporal Khairul Azmuddin Zulkiflie succumbed to his injuries when the patrol car he was driving ploughed into a rail guard along Jalan Sungai Monyet, Km 36, early Thursday.

His 56-year-old colleague, Sub-Insp. Mohd Awang Abdullah, who was on the passenger seat, sustained injuries and was rushed to the Beluran Hospital.

Kinabatangan Fire and Rescue Department Chief Rosemidian Majid said a distress call prompted four men led by Asmori Dahhiarsyah to the scene.

He said civilians had already rescued Mohd Awang by the time his team arrived at about 3.27am, adding that it took the team several minutes to extricate the trapped driver who was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics who arrived moments later.

In the second accident, a 50-year-old died shortly after the Land Cruiser he was travelling in collided head-on with an express bus at Km 83, Sandakan-Lahad Datu road, on Wednesday.

Acting Kinabatangan Police Chief ASP Marcos Lawrence identified the man as Rogeeguillo@Rogellio, who worked as an estate manager in the area.

Early investigations showed the Land Cruiser collided with the bus which was overtaking another vehicle in the 1.30pm incident. The 40-year-old bus driver and his 16 passengers escaped unscathed.

Both cases are being probed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Several cases involving police patrol vehicles have been reported in the State, one of which involved a pedestrian who was knocked by a police motorcycle patrolling unit while crossing the road near Centre Point shopping complex in Kota Kinabalu last year.

In 2013, a soldier died in hospital after being hit by a police patrol car while riding his motorcycle near Taman Fajar in Sandakan.
