Labuan: Being the fastest means of connecting people and businesses, air transport is an important tool that enhances economic development. However, the benefits from air transport can only be felt if there is sufficient investment in infrastructure capacity like tourist attraction spots and attractive holiday packages.

State Consumer Movement President Fauziah Datuk Mohd Din said relevant parties and industry players must work together and draw up strategies to lure more tourist arrivals to the duty-free island.

"With the weakening ringgit and the slump in global crude oil prices, which has resulted in increased unemployment, relevant parties must come up with concrete solutions," she said.

Fauziah welcomed the proposal by Rayani Air to expand its destination to Labuan as it augured well for the island's economic growth.

"Therefore, I call upon the parties to lobby for more direct international flights from Singapore-Kota Kinabalu-Labuan and vice versa. This will benefit the local economy," she added.

Rayani Air Manager (Commercial) Kulenthiran Balakrishnan recently said the airline was planning to strengthen its markets in Sabah and Sarawak by providing flights from Kuching-Miri, Kuching-Tawau, Kuching-Sandakan and Kuching-Labuan.

Rayani Air, Malaysia's first shariah-compliant airline, took to the skies on December 20, 2015.

Fauziah said destination promotion has been found to be an engine of economic development.

A check with the Labuan Airport revealed that Malaysia Airlines and MASwings operated 30 flights (two-way) per day out of Labuan to Kota Kinabalu, Miri and Kuala Lumpur while low-cost carrier, AirAsia, only provided between one and two flights daily to Kuala Lumpur.

The airport had undergone expansion to accommodate larger aircraft such as the Boeing 747 and the Airbus A330 with four aerobridges.

Opened in 1999, the airport has a capacity to handle over 1.2 million passengers per year.
