DAP: Take Sabah's illegals instead of 1.5m Bangladeshis
Kota Kinabalu: State Democratic Action Party (DAP) Chairman Stephen Wong (pic) said the Government should consider the one million or so illegal immigrants in Sabah for the needed industries instead of importing another 1.5 million workers from Bangladesh. He said this could be a good solution to settle the long-standing issue of illegals in Sabah since there are so many vacancies that need to be filled in the country.

Responding to a proposal made by Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi about bringing in workers from Bangladesh, Wong said what is required is a mechanism to allow the illegals in Sabah to be legalised as formal workers.

He believed this would offer a win-win solution for all parties concerned as the illegals in the state are mostly unemployed due to lack of job opportunities here, and this could lead to all sorts of social problems and crimes.

"I must stress that the DAP's stance and policy is consistent for we think that Malaysia must reduce its reliance on foreign workers but develop its high value human capital in order to achieve a high income nation status," he said, in statement.

"Since the Government is so insistent on bringing so many Bangladeshi workers to be filled in the plantation sector, why not use the illegals already in Sabah?"

He pointed out that according to the latest national population census, Sabah was reported to have around one million non-citizens which comprised nearly 30 per cent of the total state population.

He also said that since the RCI has failed to offer any solution to resolve the illegal immigrant problem, legalising them to work anywhere in Malaysia is more practical.
