Labuan: Food and beverage operators in this duty-free island have up to Feb 29 to fully comply with the Food Hygiene Regulation 2009, failing which a RM1,000 compound will be issued for each of their workers. The Labuan Health Department will jointly conduct an operation on March 1 with the local authority of Labuan Corporation (LC) Health Unit to check all the food premises on full compliance.

Its Director Dr Ismail Ali said a total of 79 food premises with 694 employees were checked during a month-long operation from Jan 4.

"At least 92 of the total number of employees were found to have not received typhoid injection and 182 have not undergone the food handling course," he said at the Food Hygiene Regulation 2009 Full Enforcement Briefing, Friday.

He said the department had been lenient with no compounds issued to the offenders since the last five years of its enforcement.

"We have not fully enforced the regulation although it had already come into effect for the past five years.

During our operations, we only resolved the cases through diplomacy and issued reminders…but after we found there were a number of eateries which have not complied with the regulations, it is high time to fully enforce it," he said.

Almost all Malay food operators were present except Chinese operators who are still holidaying for Chinese New Year.

The briefing was attended by Indian Chamber of Commerce President Datuk Daliph Singh and Malaysian Islam Chamber of Commerce Secretary Johari Abidin.

"Today's briefing is to inform all food and drink operators here that we will fully enforce the regulation.

It is not to penalise but in the interest of all. We want to project the good image of the island in line with the government's aspiration to turn Labuan into a must-visit place," he said.
